The recovery process after a cardiac surgery can differ depending on varying procedures performed as part of patient’s operative treatment. Caring for wounds and keeping up good health is mandatory after the surgery. But did you know that diet plays a vital role in your recovery as well? Nutritious food is incredibly important after surgery.

Depending on the patient’s condition, the doctor or the dietician will recommend a diet to support patient’s health and help him recover faster. For example, patients with heart failure must include a low-sodium diet. And if the patient also suffers from diabetes then it is highly recommended to follow a low-sugar and a low-fat diet.

After having undergone a cardiac surgery, considering a balanced diet including the foods as mentioned below can really work wonders in speeding up recovery and healing in the patients:

Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Apart from being a good source of fiber, fresh fruits and vegetables are a storehouse of several vitamins, minerals and immune-boosting antioxidants. Dark green leafy vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and spinach and fresh fruits like apples or oranges are high in antioxidants, minerals, and nutrients. Consuming a smoothie which is made of pureed fruits and vegetables is also an optimum combination.

High Fiber Foods

Fiber foods play a major role in preventing constipation. Whole grain breads, fruits, vegetables, cereals, both fresh or frozen fruits and vegetables are rich sources of natural fiber. Avoid eating anything that is canned as they contain high amounts of preservatives and lesser nutritional value. Buy whole grain bread that is darker in color and cereals like oatmeal that are low in sugar and easy to digest.

Lean Protein

Lean protein promotes wellness, strength and recovery. Foods such as turkey, pork, chicken, and seafood are rich sources of protein. Vegetarians can eat tofu, soy, beans and texturized vegetable protein for high protein intake. Consult your physician or the dietician for including protein supplements or drinks in your regular diet.

High-Calorie Foods

Eating plenty of calories after a cardiac surgery aids the body with all the energy it needs for healing. Beware that high-calorie food doesn’t give include processed or canned food. Have a smoothie made of pureed vegetables, fruits, dairy products like milk or yogurt and protein powder. Opting for full-fat versions of your favorite foods is also a great option to consider.

Low-fat Dairy Products

Dairy products can cause constipation, but this can be balanced out by adding plenty of fiber to your diet. Eating moderate amounts of foods like low-fat yogurt, cheese and paneer contain plenty of protein and calcium, which are necessary during the recovery period. Drinking almond milk is a great alternative to dairy products.

Restricted Cholesterol and Saturated Fat

People who have large amounts of cholesterol and saturated fats in their blood are at increased risk of having thickening of their blood vessels throughout their bodies. In addition to your diet, your medications may also increase the level of fats in your blood. Generally, your overall fat intake should not be more than 30% of your total calories each day.

While a post-surgery diet seems to be hard, but it isn’t so. With the right guidance and supervision of a professional dietician, implementing these foods into your diet can double up the speed of recovering after cardiac surgery.
