What is Neurodegeneration?

Neurodegeneration is a disease in which the central nervous system cells start to continuously deteriorate. Neurodegeneration can worsen over time, and no cure has been discovered yet. Neurodegeneration might be genetic or due to a brain stroke or a tumour. It can also present itself in someone who consumes large amounts of alcohol or people exposed to certain bacteria or viruses.

Neurodegeneration disease affects millions of people in many different ways. Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease are the two most common examples of neurodegeneration disorders in people. The treatments help with symptoms and act as pain medication for some neurodegenerative diseases.

How Can Excess Worry and Stress Lead to a Neurodegenerative Disorder?

In recent studies, stress has been observed as one of the prominent causes of neurodegenerative disorders like dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. A child exposed to excessive stress is more prone to develop a neurodegenerative disorder than one who isn’t. Adults who constantly work in a highly stressful environment or expose themselves to stressful surroundings may develop neurodegenerative diseases later in life.

A stress-related condition, independent of whether it affects the central nervous system, is diagnosed mainly based on the symptoms exhibited. Both upbringing and life-altering events can cause these disorders. Many studies and researches have shown that excessive stress can have a long-term impact on the central nervous system. Moreover, PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) or other stress-related disorders can lead to Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson’s disease in the long run.

The Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) in a cell produces proteins for the rest of the cell to use and function. It also plays a crucial role in storing calcium for the body. The ER calcium is regulated such that the cells receive the proper amount of protein required to function. When the central nervous system is subjected to stress or stress-related disorders for long periods, the distribution of calcium becomes uneven. This results in several neurodegeneration functions all over the central nervous system.

Neurodegeneration Treatment

Some therapies and lifestyle changes like practicing yoga and meditation can help people manage the stress in their lives and can be beneficial in fighting against neurodegeneration. A good night’s sleep can go a long way in the battle against neurodegeneration too. Changing food habits like reducing the intake of foods with high amounts of caffeine can also be helpful. Caffeine has the potential to make the brain feel anxious. So, if coffee gets your brain hyperactive, you should consider reducing your intake or stopping it altogether. Your doctor can also prescribe supplements and medication depending on the severity of your condition.
